The first one is that it came from a fishing village called “Kartalimen,” which was founded in the 6th century. The second one is that it came from Aydos Hill, which means “Kartal” in Greek. Archaeological excavations in the area have revealed many artifacts from the Byzantine, Anatolian Seljuk, and Ottoman empires.

Aydos Castle served as the eastern gateway to Istanbul and covers an area of 26,000 square meters from its outer walls. The castle, located on a 325-meter extension of Aydos Hill, is thought to have been built in the 11th or 12th century. There are two walls, one inside and one outside, with six and seven towers, respectively. Orhan Gazi assigned valuable commanders such as Abdurrahman Gazi, Akça Koca, and Konur Alp to capture Aydos Castle, which was a critical defense point. Abdurrahman Gazi and his soldiers captured the castle with the help of the daughter of the castle’s governor. After the conquest of Izmit in 1337, the castle lost its importance and was destroyed by Orhan Gazi.
